The Complete Cats in the Sun
by Hans Silvester
"The finest pictures ever taken of cats," says The Atlantic Monthly of Hans Silvester's photographs of Greek cats languorously stretched along whitewashed walls and sun-drenched pathways. The Complete Cats in the Sun is the essential Hans Silvester: together in one book are all the free-spirited felines from the enormously popular Cats in the Sun, Asleep in the Sun, and The Mediterranean Cat. This is a beautiful one-volume collection of those memorable cats leaping from one fishing boat to the next, prowling across the rounded azure rooftops in search of the perfect place for a quick nap in the sun, or slinking through the cool shadows of a Mediterranean afternoon.

The Complete Cats in the Sun is destined to become the classic gift book for lovers of felines, the sun, and the magic that is the Grecian Isles.

Asleep in the Sun
by Hans Silvester
Don't let the cover's cuddly close-up cause you to bypass this book. Asleep in the Sun is packed with beautiful composition and colors. Hans Silvester has been snapping the exquisite beasts of the Cycladic Islands for almost 20 years, and his love and patience have paid off before. In the 1993 Cats in the Sun, he notes the symbiotic rapport between Greeks and their feline gifts: cats keep the rat level within reason, and the humans "like them without exactly loving them, they care for them without exactly caring about them."

Silvester, however, obviously cares very much about them, and takes care to catch them in the best possible light. Mediterranean sun and shade sweep across rough pavements, blue sea, and white steps. Cats keep watch in the most tenuous spots, or nap on boats and buildings with elegant panache. If there is more sleeping than leaping in this book, why blame the exhausted kitties? It is the author who admits to being "an unconditional lover of the siesta." Anyway, they still look sublime.

The Mediterranean Cat
by Hans Silvester
Hans Silvester's cats have clawed themselves an assured niche in the cute-cat book world. The reissue of The Mediterranean Cat, as well as Cats in the Sun and Asleep in the Sun, makes for three beautiful photography books, exquisitely portraying the cats of the Greek Islands as they patrol this sun-drenched landscape. The felines of The Mediterranean Cat are an eclectic bunch. Some are a little rough and tumble, the end result of a territorial battle over the best spot in the sun. Others are regal, as they sit nose in air on an honored whitewashed doorstep, or slink up a step with a prized (and no doubt stolen) fish in tow. Here are tabbies and Russian blues, cats with pristine white fur, others with matted orange. Some are wild and feisty, others are well fed and tended to by a caring Greek household. Yet all retain their independence and self-assured aloofness. The Greek fishing boats and sunny promenades, the cobblestone streets and high rooftops all belong to the cats.

Cats in the Sun is the product of Hans Silvester's three-year investment in photographing the cats of the Greek Cycladic Islands. Every picture captures the essence of the unspoiled Mediterranean landscape--sun-drenched villas, a sparkling sea, and shady olive groves. Dominating this exquisite panorama are hundreds of cats, respected--but not domesticated--by locals, happy to have the army of mouse-catchers nearby.
